A volcano and a park in the middle of a city, that’s pretty unique!

Edinburgh calms me. I go for walks around Arthur’s Seat and the New Town and I feel relaxed and refreshed

Around 49% of Edinburgh is made up of green space.

This includes public and royal parks, burial grounds and kirkyards, allotments and community gardens, the formal gardens of the New Town and hidden courtyards of the Old Town.

Edinburgh’s green spaces are enjoyed by people of all ages as scenic locations for exercise, relaxation and play. They also shape the city’s foodscape, with locally-sourced food, including foraged ingredients, being used by an increasing number of restauranteurs. Many residents are concerned that Edinburgh is not green enough, environmentally speaking. Do you agree?

‘The greenspaces in the Old Town have played a huge part in our business since opening. We use locally-sourced, seasonal produce to showcase the best food Scotland has to offer.’

Eleanor Cunningham - Owner of The Edinburgh Larder (

I really try to eat in restaurants that use local produce.

Despite being in the centre of a very beautiful, but busy city, Cowgate under 5s Centre is a surprising, hidden beauty of green space. The natural environment invites rich, deep opportunities for play.

I think we're trying to be greener ... but we aren't doing enough really.

We’re very, very lucky to have a lot of green space as well as the beautiful buildings.
