The architecture of Edinburgh’s New Town is widely celebrated, but its furniture is less known about – and little survives in situ.
This evening talk will reveal the key types to be found in a fashionable house of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, at a time when the New Town was being built, when new patterns of urban living were being developed, and when the city’s furniture making trade was at the height of its prosperity.
David Jones taught Furniture History at the University of St Andrews for thirty years, bringing about a ‘renaissance in Scottish furniture scholarship’. He has published widely on the subject himself and now passed on the baton to a younger generation of keen scholars. He is still researching and writing on new aspects of the subject from his base in the East Neuk of Fife.
