Brian Lang was born in Edinburgh and educated at the Royal High School and the University of Edinburgh. He conducted social anthropological research in Kenya before lecturing for some years at Aarhus University, Denmark. Dr Lang has held numerous posts in heritage, the arts and conservation, including spells as head of the Historic Buildings Branch of the Scottish Office, Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland, Secretary then Deputy Chairman of the UK’s National Heritage Memorial Fund, Director of Public Affairs at the National Trust, Chief Executive and Deputy Chairman of the British Library. He has been a Visiting Scholar at the Getty Institute, Los Angeles, Chair of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and is presently a Trustee of the National Museums of Scotland. Following his retirement as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Andrews, he has been involved in numerous advisory projects in the Middle East, France and the USA, mainly on leadership and strategic academic issues.
